According to Prabowo, children between the ages of eleven and twelve years learn languages more rapidly. He noted that early exposure to multiple languages will give Indonesian students better opportunities in the global job market.
"From a young age, under eleven or twelve years old, they learn faster. Our children must have access to the best education so that when they enter the workforce, they possess enhanced capabilities and can be accepted anywhere, working with anyone," he explained.
English: Already Mandatory, Soon for Elementary Schools
The minister clarified that English already holds a different status compared to other foreign languages. Currently, English is a compulsory subject for junior high (SMP) and senior high (SLTA) students, and it has even become an examination subject at these levels.
However, a significant policy shift is planned for 2027. From that year onward, English will transition from an optional subject to a mandatory one for elementary school students beginning in third grade.
"Starting from 2027, we will teach English as a mandatory subject beginning in third grade," confirmed Mu'ti.
Introduction of Additional Languages
President Prabowo identified eight foreign languages for the new program: English, Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, and Russian. The minister explained that while English has its own timeline, other languages are currently in the introduction phase.
Some educational institutions have already begun teaching languages beyond English, particularly Mandarin and Korean, though primarily at higher education levels. The minister noted that several countries have offered to provide teaching personnel to support language instruction in their respective languages.
"Several schools already teach foreign languages besides English, including Mandarin and Korean. And there are several countries that offer to provide personnel who can assist in foreign language learning according to their respective nations," he added.
Centralized Learning Studio and Workforce Needs
President Prabowo also announced plans to establish a centralized studio staffed by the country's best teachers. This facility will facilitate distance learning accessible to thousands of schools nationwide, with foreign language education being an integral component.
The initiative responds to growing international demand for Indonesian workers. According to the President, foreign leaders frequently inquire about the possibility of employing Indonesian workers in their countries. These opportunities exist primarily in tourism, healthcare facilities, nursing, and caregiver positions.
